Obituary, San Francisco [CA] Chronicle, 22 Apr 2010:
Alfred Sol Cohen
March 11, 1915 ~ April 8, 2010
Born in San Francisco the first son of Kalman and Sarah Cohen, Alfred grew up in the City and on a Petaluma chicken farm. Graduate of Polytechnic High School he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps and helped turn the wild lands of Northern California into state parks. He always remembered those years with the CCC with affection. They were years that engendered a lifelong love of the outdoors and the West. A builder of ships during the war he was not allowed to enlist along with his brothers Melvin and Sheldon. After the war he went to work in the candy and tobacco wholesale distribution business and was liked and respected by his coworkers and customers in the City and along the western peninsula. Master Mason, Scoutmaster, chef to the Alpine Club, Alfred devoted his life to the service of others; first to his family and then to his friends and neighbors. He will always be fondly remembered for his kindness and generosity. Alfred is survived by his wife Loraine, his brother Sheldon, his children Susan Sturgeon, Barbara Blalock, Robert Emberton, Mark Lubeck, Edwin Cohen, Marguerite Cohen and Henry Cohen; his grandchildren Kenneth Giblin, David Giblin, Alan Sturgeon, Michele Kane, Kimberly Lawrence, Mihal Emberton, Tamar Emberton, Jesse Emberton, Amy Lubeck, Laina Lubeck, Miranda Cohen and Rikio Cohen; his great-grandchildren Mathew Giblin, Michael Giblin, Dillon Kane and his great-great-grandchildren Devyn Giblin, Haley Giblin. There will be a memorial service at the Mount Diablo Unitarian Universalist Church 55 Eckley Lane, Walnut Creek, CA at 3:30PM Friday April 23.
