The story of this double stone is one of the most interesting and tragic in Pownal. Nancy was the first wife of Samuel Barber. They had five children before she died at the young age of 30. The second wife, Polly, was Nancy's younger sister. Samuel had two more children with Polly before she too died, at the age of 29. The Andrew sisters (there were 7) were said to be beautiful girls. Why these two died at such an early age is not known. To lose one young wife, daughter and mother is tragic enough. But to lose a second wife, second daughter, and second mother is just too much tragedy to comprehend. Seeing this stone, for those who knew them, must have been heart rending. --Carolyn Adams
