Richard Henry Lee Burden was the son of Richard Henry Burden and Prudence Samuel.
He married Arie Elizabeth Calico in 1884 in Clifty, Madison Co. AR. He moved his family to Oklahoma Territory in 1892 and settled in a small community 5 miles NW of present-day Macomb. He named the community Mt. Zion and helped build the Mt. Zion schoolhouse.
Engraved on his tombstone is the following: "A loving husband, a father dear, a faithful friend lies buried here." Richard is buried beside his mother, Prudence (Samuel) Burden.
His wife, Arie, lived 45 years after the death of her husband. When she died in 1962, the road to Mt. Zion Cemetery was "barely a cattle trail" making it almost impossible to carry a casket there for burial. Arie told her family that she "longed to be buried beside her husband" but that it wasn't "practical" so she chose to be buried in Prairie View Cemetery, located 4 miles east of Macomb and only a quarter-mile from her house.
