Amanda Zana Shaw Beard was born in Harford County, Maryland February 16, 1836 to Harrison and Anna (Hutchins) Shaw. She moved with her family to Union County, Ohio when she was eight years of age. She was united in marriage to John Beard in Marysville, Ohio on December 24, 1861. To this union were born ten children, four of whom died in infancy. Amanda moved with her family to Richland County, Illinois in August 1864, where they remained until the Fall of 1889 when they resettled in Lawrence County.
Amanda departed this life on March 24, 1918, aged 82 years, one month and four days. Five sons and a daughter survive her. Her companion, John Beard, preceded her to the better world March 26, 1917.
The deceased was received into the Christian Church in Sumner by letter from the Presbyterian Church, April 8, 1908. She was an intelligent, devoted Christian, always at the Church services when possible.
The funeral was conducted at the Christian Church in Sumner, Monday, March 25, at 2 p. m. by her pastor, Rev. G. W. Shepherd, to a large audience of sympathizing friends. Internment at Antioch Cemetery.
