EMMETT DEAN CARTER , 55, or rural Milton died on Monday, February 6, 2006 at the VA Medical Center in Iowa City, IA. He was born April 17, 1950 in Pearl IL to Frank J. and Lillian Carlton Carter. He married Kathleen R. Hawkins on July 4, 1997 in Pittsfield, IL. Emmett served in the US Air Force. He was a security supervisor for seven years and six months. He received National Defense Service Medal, Air Force Longevity Service Award, small arms expert marksmanship ribbon, basic security Police Qualification Badge, Air Force good conduct medal with one oak leaf cluster (May 17, 1975-May 16,1978) Emmett was a retired deputy from the Pike County Sheriff's Department. He retired from this position in 2000. He started as a dispatcher in December of 1979. Emmett also worked from 2001 to 2005 as a patrol officer in Pleasant Hill. Highlights of Emmett's career include numerous drug busts and helping hundreds of people though difficult times. His motto was, as far as law enforcement, to treat people the way he would want to be treated if the situation was reversed. A scholarship trust fund has been set up in honor of Emmett for law enforcement. Emmett was an avid outdoorsman. He was a big part of Carter's Hunting Lodge. He loved bow hunting, turkey hunting, and squirrel hunting. One of his greatest passions was taking the grandchildren out and teaching them the way of the woods. Emmett will be greatly missed this spring during turkey season. He also helped us with our logging and lumber operation. He had a Class A CDL and was an excellent truck driver. He helped his children and grandchildren along with everyone around him that he loved as much as he could. He was the best dad anyone could ever ask for. We never wanted or needed anything thanks to him. Survivors include: his wife, Kathleen R. Carter, three sons, Shawn Carter and wife Stacey (Shaw) Carter, Nathan Carter and wife Tammy and Guy McMahon all of rural Milton. Emmett has three brothers and five sisters Lorraine Mercer of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Ervin Carter and wife Doris of Pico Rivera, CA, Eileen Pfeiffer and husband Charles of Erial, NJ, Barbara Hall and husband Richard of Pittsfield, Mary Bliss of Pittsfield, Leroy Bland and wife Doris of Brighton, IL Virgil Carter of Chicago, IL., Helen Murray and husband Joseph from Vancouver, WA and Dale Carter of rural Milton. Also surviving are Emmett's grandchildren, Nicole Carter of Bluffs, Michael Allen of Pearl, Austin Shaw, Joshua Carter, Nate Carter, Lacey Carter, Tavior Carter and Nicholas Carter all from rural Milton. Preceded in death were his parents Frank and Lillian Carter and his maternal grandparents, also his sister Betty Carter/Bland of Brighton. Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 11, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at the Assembly of God Church in Pittsfield, IL. with Rev. Quentin Beard officiating. Burial at the Miller Cemetery, Pearl, IL. with military graveside rites by Pittsfield American Legion Post #152. Lunch will be served following the services at the Assembly of God Church. Visitation will be held on Friday, February 10, 2006 at 4-8 p.m. at the Niebur Funeral Home in Pittsfield, IL.
