John Bell, Sr. was one of two known children of Benjamin Bell, Jr. (1749-1781). His middle initial was probably "J." based on a John J. Bell being the bondsman for the marriage of Patsey Bell (his oldest daughter) to Isaac Turnage. John married Mary in South Carolina about 1798. Her maiden name was possibly "Reese" based on records showing that family living nearby. John, Mary, and their children moved to Wilson Co. TN between 1810 and 1816 to live near his brother Joseph Tucker Bell, who was a justice of the peace there. Mary died before 1820 and John later moved to Williamson Co. IL in 1854 to live with his son Sampson Benjamin Bell Sr. and his family. John Bell Sr. died in Williamson Co. IL and is buried in the Bell-Davis plot.
