Richard "Scratch" Benning, age 64, of Farmers Retreat, died Sunday, November 22, 2009 at his residence with his family by his side. He was born September 22, 1945 in the same residence in which he lived his entire life. His parents were Harland Benning and Esther Grelle Benning. Richard graduated from Dillsboro High School, and spent 1965 to 1967 in the US Army, serving in Vietnam. On April 2, 1977 he was married to Vera Fields, who survives. "Scratch" was employed at Seagram's as a distiller for 30 years, and then at Argosy/Hollywood Casino for 12 years. He was devoted to his wife, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, and did anything he could for them. He was a member of St. Johns Lutheran Church in Farmers Retreat, the Milan VFW, and the Dillsboro American Legion. Besides his wife, Vera, "Scratch" is survived by his children, Michael (Karen) Lawhorn, of Logan, IN, Margaret "Beth" (Darrell) Weaver, of Aurora, Pamela Sue (David) Davies, of Dillsboro, Amy Marie (Carl) Fryman, of Farmers Retreat, Kimberly Renee Caldwell, of Aurora, and Heather Ann Rump, of Farmers Retreat; 11 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; 1 brother, Dean Benning, of Farmers Retreat. He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services will be Saturday, November 28, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Johns Lutheran Church in Farmers Retreat, with interment in St. Johns Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be Friday, November 27, 2009 from 5-8 p.m. at Filter-DeVries Funeral Home in Dillsboro. Memorials may be given in his memory to the Milan VFW, Hospice of Dearborn County, and the Dillsboro American Legion.
