The More children (Ellen, Jasper, Richard, and Mary) had quite the sad story. Their story begins with William More, whom had two sons: Edward and Thomas. Edward inheritated his father's estate, while Thomas became officer of the court of King Henry VIII. Yes, this is the same Thomas More that Shakespeare had written of about and had a movie made about his life "A man of all seasons". Most recently he was portrayed in the HBO series "The Tutors". Meanwhile, Edward's grandson Jasper had inherited the family estate. All of Jasper's sons had died in tragic circumstances, leaving his unmarried daughter, Katherine, as sole heir. The More family was afraid that if Katherine were to marry, part of the estate would fall into the hands of the husband's family. The family decided that Katherine should marry her cousin Samuel to prevent this from occurring. Understandably, Katherine was not happy with this arrangement and and was having an affair with her paramour Jacob Blakeway. Samuel became suspicious when he realized that his four children didn't look like him at all, but bore a striking resemblance to Jacob Blakeway! When Samuel confronted Jacob, Jacob fled to Ireland. Samuel then divorced Katherine, leaving her completely destitute. Samuel took custody of the children and promptly sold them off as servants to diferent Pilgrim families. The children were young; Ellen was 8, Jasper 7, Richard 6, and Mary was only 4. One can only imagine the pain and abandonment these innocent children suffered as the result of their parent's divorce. Jasper, Ellen, and Mary died soon after the Mayflower landed in Plymouth harbor. The middle child, Richard, did survive the ordeal and had three children whom survived to adulthood. He died at the ripe old age of 82 in Salem, MA, having been witness to the infamous Salem witch trials. It is through him that the More family line continues.
