Funeral services for Lena Rebecca Whipple-Estes were held, November 9 at Our Most Merciful Savior Episcopal Church at Santee. She died November 5. Internment was at the Episcopal Cemetery at Santee. Pallbearers were Scott Henderson, Jamie Estes, Glen Estes, Carl Medicine Crow, Jr., Miles Estes,Ross Medicine Crow, Curtis Estes,Rueben Estes, Thomas "Toma" Estes, Jr., Honorary pallbeareres were Riding Eagle Singers, Rose Eagle Star, Brenda Estes, Jewel Jandneau, Gayle Zigler, Phyllis Crazy Bull, Bernadette Myers, Irene Flute, Shirley Crane, Connie LaRoche, Bingo Buddies, Marla Sexton, Brian LaRoche.
Lena R. Whipple-Estes was born August 18, 1926 in Parmalee, SD to Henry Whipple and Linda Lawrence-Whipple. Lena attended school at St. Mary's in Springfield, SD and lived her earlier years in Santee.
Lena married James Estes pf February 8, 1948 in Lower Brule, SD. Lena and James lived and worked in Denver, Co from 1958 through 1976. Lena and James moved to lower Brule in 1976 where Lena lived until her passing on Nov.5, 2010.
Lena's work was in the medical field. She was a Community Health Representative and will be remembered for her many years of dedicated service to the people of Lower Brule. Lena had a beautiful voice and loved to sing, she could always be counted on to share it by singing at funerals and wakes when she was able to attend.
Lena is survived by her five sons, Leonard James Estes, Denver; Michael G. Estes Sr., Wayne Curtis Estes, Thomas Christian Estes and Perry Reginald est es, all of Lower Brulel, SD; two daughers, Myrna Henderson, Pagosa Springs, CO; and Crystal Medicine Crow-Estes, Chamberlain, SD; 27 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren.
Lena was preceeded in death by her husband, her parents, two sisters and two brothers.
