Huntingdon Journal, August 1886

Poor old Jakey Gordon, who for a number of years resided in this city and vicinity, and who was a familiar object to our citizens as he passed along our streets in a worn-out wagon drawn by a skeleton of a horse, following his avocation of teamster by which he was enabled, until disabled by age and disease, to earn a meager livelyhood. Until a few months ago he resided in Smithfield, when he went to live with a son near McConnellstown, where he remained until Tuesday of last week when he went to Porter township to visit another son residing near what is known as "Whittaker's Bridge", spanning the Juniata at the foot of the Warrior Ridge. On Thursday of the same week he started out to take a walk, and being almost blind, fell head foremost over the enbankment of the bridge, a distance of twelve or fifteen feet, alighting on his head, fracturing his skull and sustaining other injuries, resulting in his death a few hours later. Poor old man, his life was a checkered one. Those who profess to know say that in his younger years he was resonably well off in this worlds goods, but by bad management and dissipation his possessions were all swept away, and the last years of his life were spent in penury and want. He leaves a wife and eight children behind, five sons and three daughters. His remains were interred in the cemetery at Alexandria on Saturday afternoon. Deceased was aged 83 years. Let us hope that after life's fitul fever he sleeps well.
