Elijah was born out of wedlock when his mother was twenty years old. Suit filed by her father shows that Charles Boulton was found to be his father. Charles was fined $6.25 plus court costs and was ordered to pay Catherine $20/year for five years and post a security bond with courts costs. Catherine later married Charles when Elijah was two years old. However, Elijah kept his mother's maiden name.
