Saguache, Colo. resident Marcus Ray Conley, 73, passed away June 29, 2008. He was born in Rattan, Okla. on Jan. 23, 1935. His mother Era Jemima Dellinger, passed away when he was 10 days old. His father, Sam Henry, passed away when Marcus was 8 years old. He, an older brother, and his sister were raised by their maternal grandmother Lottie Dellinger. She lived long enough to see Marcus graduate from college.
He was more than adept at various career choices. He was known for his bib overalls and wood products. He chose his lumber mill garb because he had ‘done his time' in a suit and tie indoors. The time spent uranium mining/surveying kept him underground too much.
He was known for his honesty, integrity, an extremely high intelligence on so many subjects. Even though he was born in Rattan, he always considered Saguache home. He took thousands of pictures to send to family and friends.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Ester Archuleta Conley and brother HC Conley. He is survived by his wife Laura Lee of the family home in Saguache; sons Elvie Ray (Annette)Conley Sr. their child Elvie Ray Jr, Mark Sam Conley his children Lucas Mondragon, Andy Sam and Abe, step sons Richard Lee (Katie) Wheeler and their children Ryan and Duncan, Michael Ray (Danica) Wheeler and their children Makayla and Mikolas, step daughters Amy Coleman her child Zoey, Jody Coleman her children Angus and Eric; brothers Sam and Benny Conley; sister Tommie Doughty, as well as many other family members and friends.
Services will be held on Sat, July 5 at 10 am at the Chicago Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be donated to the Saguache County Library thru Romeo Funeral Home in Alamosa, Colo. who is in care of the arrangements.
