Fern was the second child of Henry Edwin and Nanna (Robbins) Hart. She married Samuel "Gene" Eugene Bishop on her 18th birthday, March 4, 1932 and together they had six children but sadly Fern would have several miscarriages, still births, and even lose a couple of her children at young ages. Top photo: My grandmother, Evelyn is the oldest and Fern is the baby. They were the only children of Henry and Nanna Hart. Sadly, Evelyn and Fern lost both their parents to TB. Fern was only 6 years old when their father passed and was only 14 when her mother passed away. In the 1940 US Census it lists Samuel E. Bishop, age 28; Fern, age 26; Phyllis, age 5; and Evelyn, age 4; as living at 719 Sierra Madre Street in Colorado Springs and Fern's sister, my grandmother, Evelyn was living at 723 Sierra Madre Street. The story was passed down through the family that Henry Edwin and Nanna owned three homes on Sierra Madre. Prior to making her Will, Nanna asked my grandmother which of the three homes she wanted so she could put it in her Will. The other two homes would go to Fern. The reason we believe Nanna did this is because my grandmother was married when her mother was dying of TB and Fern was only 14. Nanna figured my grandmother had a husband to care for her and Fern was still a minor and she was worried who would take care of her youngest daughter when she was gone. Of course my grandmother assured her she would care for her little sister when their mother passed but I guess Nanna just wanted to pass knowing her youngest daughter would be okay financially without her as they had already lost their father to TB nine years earlier. I believe Nanna did what she believe to be right and fair in her heart but my grandmother always felt that her mother loved Fern more and she said she would never leave more to one child than another and she did not. When my grandmother passed she made sure everything was split equally between her five children.
