Calvin C. Castleman

HOLLIS, Okla. - Calvin C. Castleman, 84, died Friday, May 28, 2010.

Services will be today in First Baptist Church in Hollis with the Rev. Jim Westmoreland officiating.

Burial will be in OM Cemetery by Stewart Funeral Service in Hollis.

Calvin Curtis Castleman was born in the home of parents Bill and Eula Castleman of the O.M. community of Harmon County, Okla. He grew up on the family farm and went to school in the O.M. area.

After the outbreak of World War II, Calvin volunteered for service in the U.S. Army Air Force. He served his country with distinction as a tail gunner in a B-29 Superfortress. His squadron flew bombing missions out of India over the Himalaya Mountains into Japanese-occupied China. He was decorated with the Purple Heart for injuries received in battle.

After the war, Calvin worked as an electrical lineman for Central Rural Electric Cooperative in Stillwater, Okla. He eventually worked his way up to the position of line superintendent for CREC, and in the early 1970s came back to Harmon County as general manager of Harmon Rural Electric Cooperative.

Calvin was active in the community and one of his proudest accomplishments was his years of service on the board of Harmon Memorial Hospital.

Calvin was preceded in death by his first wife, Jeannie, in 1974. He married Irvine Mayhugh Carrick in 1975, and she passed away in August 2009.

Survivors include his children, Quinette Henry and Robert Castleman; and three stepsons, Jimmy, George and Joe Carrick.

He will long be remembered by his brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, 15 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Calvin was honored and pleased to be one of "The Greatest Generation."
