YORK - Sterling K. "Sarge" Glatfelter, 76, of West Manchester Township, died at 2 a.m. Monday at Memorial Hospital, following a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Rose A. (Trimmer) Glatfelter.
The service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Geiple Funeral Home Inc., 53 Main St., Glen Rock. Burial will be in Greenmount United Methodist Church Cemetery, Glen Rock, with military rites by the Hanover Area Veterans Council. Viewing will be 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Mr. Glatfelter was born Jan. 31, 1924, in Glen Rock. He was the son of the late Ralph D. and Gertrude (Sterner) Gladfelter.
He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, retiring as a gunnery staff sergeant in 1968 after 25 years of service. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II, the Korean War and Vietnam War. During the early 1960s, he was stationed at Quosent Marine Barracks near North Kingston, R.I., and was assigned security duty for President John F. Kennedy and his family when they traveled to the New England area and the Kennedy Compound on Cape Cod, and served on Air Force One. Following his retirement, he was a welder at Harley- Davidson Inc. in York for several years. He was a member of Greenmount United Methodist Church in Glen Rock, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2493 in Mount Wolf and American Legion Post 543 in Red Lion.
Mr. Glatfelter is survived by three sons, Lawrence Glatfelter of Ellicott City, Md., Stanley Glatfelter of Seven Valleys and Wayde Glatfelter of Dover; four daughters, Phyllis Adams-Gemmill of Shrewsbury, Betty Danley and Tina Glatfelter, both of York and Deborah Glatfelter of Manchester; nine grandchildren; eight great- grandchildren; two brothers, Roy D. Gladfelter of Glen Rock RD 3 and Phillip Gladfelter of Seven Valleys; and a sister, Phyllis Greenplate of Jacobus.
Officiating at the service will be his pastor, Frank Miller.
