Lowell "Stocky" Stockman
Birth: Apr. 12, 1901
Umatilla County
Oregon, USA
Death: Aug. 9, 1962
King County
Washington, USA

US Congressman. He graduated from Oregon State University in 1922, was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity, and wrote the music for the school's fight song. After graduating from college Stockman became a farmer in Pendleton. He served on the Pendleton School Board and was a member of the Oregon Liquor Control Commission before winning election to the US House of Representatives as a Republican in 1942, defeating incumbent Congressman and former Governor Walter M. Pierce. Stockman was reelected four times and served from January, 1943 to January, 1953. A well-known figure nationally because his six feet six inch, 270 pound size made him by far the biggest member of Congress, Stockman was a conservative who opposed most government spending, though he favored federal appropriations to aid farmers and develop the Pacific Northwest. Stockman was also a vocal opponent of the Marshall Plan. He did not run for reelection in 1952 and after leaving Congress he returned to farming, also serving as Vice President of Oregon Fiber Products and Treasurer of Pilot Rock Lumber Company. From 1956 to 1959 Stockman served on the federal Theodore Roosevelt Centennial Commission. In 1959 he moved to Bellevue, Washington, where he operated a trailer court until his unexpected death from a heart attack. Stockman was buried on land in the University of Washington's George L. Pack Experimental Forest at the foot of Mount Rainier. (bio by: Bill McKern)
