Letter to the Editor of the Caswell Messenger, Caswell Co NC June 29, 1979
Dear Mr. Plumblee:
In answer to your letter of June 16th, I am trying to devote as much time as possible to indexing my collection of genealogical records that I started about 1940. I have collected four volumes of records so far and still collect them when available. These volumes are the size of the County Deed Books, 11˝ x 18 inch sheets of paper and each book contains about 700 pages. I have typed or microfilmed the records in these books and they will be of much help to anyone doing family histories or other research. I recorded records in my private Miscellaneous Records Books Numbered 1, 2, 3, and 4.
My retirement job is to index these records so they will be of benefit to interested searchers. I do not limit my collection to Caswell County, N.C., but record records from anywhere dealing with people. If I can finish indexing the collection, it will be most valuable. At present I am planning to place my books and index in the Gunn Memorial Library, Yanceyville, N.C. to be permanently housed there and available to the public. I have made a Xeroxed copy for the Register of Deeds Office, Yanceyville, N.C., and left it there for people’s convenience. The Office will charge for any copies anyone wants. So far I have made about 30,000 index cards and estimate that there will be another 70,000 cards needed. I hope I can live long enough to complete the work.
I started this collection for two purposes, one was to save the records for future generations and the other was my way of saying “Thanks” to the people of Caswell County, N.C. for their generosity in letting me hold the Register of Deeds Office for 42 years without opposition. That I will never forget.
