John Orvin Flatgard, 90, of Brainerd, Minnesota, formerly of Windom, Minnesota, passed away at his home on Wednesday, May 27, 2009. Funeral Services are planned for Saturday, May 30, 2009 at 10:30a.m. at Bethany Lutheran Church in Christiana Township, Jackson County, with Reverend Andrew Flatgard officiating. Burial will take place immediately following the services at Bethany Lutheran Cemetery, Christiana Township.
A visitation will be held on Friday, May 29, 2009 from 5-7pm at the Osterberg Funeral Home and on Saturday one hour prior to the services at the church.
John Orvin Flatgard, the son of Julius and Jensina (Ellefson) Flatgard, was born on May 16, 1919 on the family farm in Christiana Township, Jackson County, Minnesota. John was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran Faith at Bethany Lutheran Church. As a youth John attended Jackson County Contry Schools.
On October 1, 1943 John was united in Marriage to Doris Olson on the Olson Family Farm near Windom. After marriage John and Doris made their home in the Bergen area where John farmed until 1962, when he and Doris purchased the Bergen Meat Locker, now known as Bergen Meats, which they ran together unitl their retirement in 1979. Doris and John remained in Windom until 2005 when they moved to Brainerd to be closer to their children. John passed away at home on May 27, 2009 at the age of 90 years, and 11 days.
John was a lifetime member of Bethany Lutheran Church near Bergen, and a very active member of the rural community, acting as an election official for Christiana Township, and a county assessor in the late 1950's. John was a member of the Sons of Norway and a very proud Democrat. John had very few hobbies, coming from a generation that deemed work a hobby, enjoying chopping wood and he loved working the land. Outside of work John did enjoy his fishing.
John is survived by his four children, Darrell Flatgard of Montevideo, Minnesota, Barbara Flatgard (Larry LaRue) of Bloomington, Minnesota, Duane (Charlene) Flatgard of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, and Tammy (Cory) Myran of Brainerd, Minnesota; five grandchildren, Mitchell Flatgard, Melissa Flatgard, Spencer (Lou) Flatgard, Andrew (Shelley) Flatgard and John Myran; three great-grandchildren, Chaz Richardson, Tanner Richardson, and Andie Flatgard; and one sister Olene (Art) Peckham of Sugarland, Texas.
John was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 65 years Doris, and 3 brothers and 7 sisters.
