Velma J. Graves was born Jan. 7, 1934, to Joe and Eliza Butler in Tom. Velma accepted the Lord at an early age and years later re-dedicated her life. She was a faithful member of Friendship Church of God for many years where she remained faithful until failure of her health. She attended Booker T. Washington School in Idabel.
She united in marriage to George Graves until his death.
Velma was a kind, beautiful and loving person. She was a people person, and she had a special way of touching everyone's heart she met. She opened her heart to all with her gift of passion. Her loving spirit and beautiful smile will forever be remembered by those with whom she came in contact.
Velma departed this life on Saturday, April 26, 2008. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Branda Reynolds; her parents; her sisters, Jannie Moore and Juanita Todd; and brothers Thelma (twin), Simmie Joe, and O.W. Butler.
She leaves to celebrate her homegoing one daughter, Wanda Harris of Idabel; two sons, Clifford Butler of Idabel and Herbert Hendrix of Oklahoma City; two stepdaughters, Peggy Henderson of Houston, Texas, and Hazel Morris of Tollette, Ark.; eight grandchildren, Kimberle James, Gayla Harris, Brandy Compton, all of Oklahoma City, Crystal Callender and Katrina Myers of Desoto, Texas, Frederick Harris of Idabel, Kirkland Reynolds of Dallas, Texas, and Clifton Butler of Los Angeles, Calif.; 12 great grandchildren and one brother, Luther Harrell; three sisters-in-law, Ola F. Butler and Jean Butler of Dallas, Texas, and Kay Butler of Elmore City; and many loved ones who cherish her memory.
Services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday at the Community Faith Baptist Church in Tom 11 a.m., Saturday, May 3, 2008 with the Rev. Walt Wesley officiating.
Burial will be at Della Simpson Cemetery in Tom.
Professional services are under the direction of Hicks Funeral Home, Hope, Ark., assisted by Nunley's Funeral Home, Idabel.
