"The LaFayette Sun" - July 31, 1907:

Tribute of Respect (Written by request).

Early on the morning of June 23, the Angel of death visited our midst and took from the home the spirit of Mr. Preston Blackwelder. He had been in lingering health for several days, and his death was a surprise to his many friends. Yet his neighbors and friends had realized the sad truth that he could not long survive his condition. The cause of his death was that dreaded disease, appendicitis. He realized that his condition was hopeless.
He was a devoted Christian, always trying to perform his church duties. While but a youth, he was converted and received into the membership of County Line Baptist Church, being baptized by Rev. R. A. J. Cumbee. He remained a faithful member of this church until his death. He was attentive to Sabbath School, and engaged in the teaching of God’s word. He took great interest in prayer meeting and was always in his place, ready to respond to every call of duty. He loved his pastor, and was glad when the meeting days came so he could have him visit his home and meet with him in worship at the house of the Lord. He died in the faith of the gospel of Jesus Christ, in full assurance of a blessed immortality. His short sickness was very severe, and yet in it all he murmured not against an all-wise Providence. His faith in his Savior and the hope of immortal life made his last days bright and happy. He often expressed his willingness to depart and be with Christ, and was fully prepared for the change. This was evidenced by many strong expressions of his abiding confidence in God that his salvation had already been made sure. It was sad to witness such a separation and hear him speak so calmly and cheerfully of the near approach of death and of his home in Heaven, and the nearer the end of his life came the brighter were his hopes for the life on the other side. He was 30 years old and was never known to mistreat anyone, and was never heard to utter an oath and never used any kind of intoxicants. He was always gentle and kind. He was industrious, and by close attention to business he had accumulated a good portion of this world’s goods, and he gave liberally to the Lord’s cause. A few hours before death came he called the family and friends around him and bade them farewell telling them he was ready and willing to go – that he had a good home here and plenty of everything, but there was a home in Heaven far more glorious than any home on earth. With a trembling voice he tried to sing, “Jesus Lover of My Soul”, and one or two other songs of his choice, but said he would wait and sing them in the sweet bye and bye.
The pain of life with him is passed and he has crossed over the dark valley of the shadow of death and sleeps that calm and peaceful sleep, unknown to pain. His remains were laid to rest in the Dudleyville Cemetery, the funeral services being conducted by his pastor, Rev. C. A. Strickland. Mr. Preston was a single man, but leaves many relatives to mourn his death. A large circle of friends from far and near attended his funeral, showing the high esteem in which he was held by those who knew him best.
Sooner or later the summons will come to one and all, and may we so live that we will be in the likeness of him, ready to meet death when it comes, and join him and friends of other days gone before, in the land that is fairer than day.
