Robert Bailey.
The subject of this sketch, whose portrait appears in our pages, was born in Kentucky, December 26, 1827. At the early age of seven he moved with his parents to Morgan county, Illinois, and when twelve accompanied them to Sangamon county, same State, where he resided until he was of age.

In the year 1848 Mr. Bailey moved to Polk county, Iowa, and there abode until the Spring of 1850, when he crossed the plains with ox-teams, reaching the mines in Placer county in October of that year. Here he worked until the Spring of 1852, in which season he transferred his habitation to Sacramento, continuing there until the Fall, when he once more moved and located near Bloomfield, Sonoma county. In the autumn of 1855 Mr. Bailey returned to Iowa and then to Missouri, where, purchasing a drove of cattle, he conducted them overland to California, arriving in the Fall of 1856.

In November of that year he moved to his present ranch, and is considered one of the "solid men" and large land owners of Marin. At the present writing Mr. Bailey is constructing a splendid mansion, the main building of which will measure thirty by thirty-eight feet, of two stories in height, to which will be attached an "Ell," of sixteen by twenty-four feet, of the same height as the main portion; the cornices are to be of the kind known as the "bracket and dental;" hot and cold water will be laid on throughout the building; it is contemplated that it shall be lit with gas, while the front facade will be protected by a broad veranda.

Mr. Bailey married, in November, 1851, Mary Hickman, a native of Massachusetts, who was born September 8, 1833. Their children are: Mary Ellen, born April 29, 1854; Alice Jane, born April 22, 1856; Laura Asenith, born November 5, 1860; Robert Henry, born January 3, 1863; William Hendricks, born July 14, 1864; Louis Clark, born March 10, 1866; Warren Grant, born January 23, 1868.

The above history did not list the children that were deceased at the time; namely, George, Emma & Allen.

On June 17, 1880, Bailey's residence was burnt to the ground. The fire occurred about noon, and was caused by a defective stovepipe in a small house in the yard in which Mr. Bailey's mother lived. It was with difficulty that she was saved from burning. The wind blowing in the direction of the house in which Mr. Bailey's family resided, soon set it on fire, and it burned so rapidly that nothing could be saved. All the furniture, bedding, clothing, etc., were burned, including a fine piano, the entire loss being about $4,000., on which there was no insurance. The sewing machine was saved. The new house now building not being completed, Mr. Bailey and family were turned out of doors, without a house to live in, or any furniture, cooking utensils, bedding or clothing except what they had on their persons. per Marin Journal.

Will of Bailey - dated 1882
Interesting notation about Mr. Bailey's will. Provision was made for the comfortable support of his aged mother and the balance of the property is divided among the children, who are to receive shares as they come of age.

However, exception is made as to one son, in whose case it was provided that if he married a certain young lady, he shall receive nothing until he reaches the age of 30. This clause the young lady has summarily nullified by effecting a matrimonial alliance in another quarter.
