__________

Esther Kathryn Nickel was born January 20, 1920 in Gotebo, Oklahoma. She died Wed., Aug. 31, 2005, at her home at the age of 85. At an early age her family moved to a farm just south of Inola, where she grew up attending a small country school. Later she attended Inola High School where she graduated with honors.

Esther was a young teenager when she accepted Christ as her Saviour while attending the Mennonite Brethren Church. It was during the social events at the church that she met and eventually married Edwin Nickel in 1941. Their life together included the raising of five children along with numerous work-related adventures. These included farming early on, and operating a feed store in downtown Inola in the late 1950's, where Esther kept the books and ran the front office.

Always a mother first, Esther was a tremendous homemaker. She was always gardening, sewing, and most notably cooking. She was well known for her pies, breads and jellies. Later when the youngest children were old enough, she worked seventeen years at the Longhorn Café, where the townspeople came to enjoy her cooking as well.

Esther was known for her smile and gentle, loving nature. She never had a cross word for anyone. She enjoyed her Sunday school class and singing in the choir.

She is predeceased by her husband, Edwin, to whom she was married for sixty-one years. She is survived by their five children: Jim Nickel of Lancaster, California, Shirley Franz of Inola, David Nickel of Euless, Texas, Stan Nickel of Yukon and Karen Adams of Inola. There are also fourteen grandchildren: Loren and Larissa Nickel, Jeff Franz and Kim Graham, David Jr. and Joe Nickel, Kyle, Lara and Kate Nickel, Aaron and Grant Huffines, Hannah Walker and Caleb and Blane Adams. There are also four great-grandchildren.

Esther is also survived by two brothers and one sister: Art Berg, John Berg, and Ruth Friesen of California, along with numerous nephews and nieces.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m., Sun., Sept. 4, at First Baptist Church of Inola with Dr. Mike Butler officiating. Burial will follow at Parkside Mennonite Cemetery under the direction of the Inola Funeral Home & Crematory. Visitation will be held at the funeral home Sat. 1-6 p.m.
