Ole Jacob Amundsen was born in Norway and in 1881 immigrated to Wisconsin. He moved on to Minneapolis and ended up living for twenty years in Devil's Lake, North Dakota.
He married Mary Thompson and they had nine children: Agnes, Claude, Adolph, Clara, John, May, Grace, Ethel and Lena.
In 1901 Ole traveled to Alberta and purchased a tract of land from the Canadian Pacific Railway Company. He then went back to Devil's Lake and convinced 25 other farmers to come to what is now known as Claresholm in 1902. He sold 21 sections of land in one afternoon. He also had the township surveyed.
Ole was a first cousin to Roald Amundsen, the explorer.
