Rev. Msgr. Theodore Kraus, son of Theodore and Theodora Kraus, was ordained a Priest of the Diocese of Buffalo and served there for many years, until he moved to California for health reasons and became a member of the Diocese of Oakland in 1999.
He attended Our Lady of the Angels Seminary, Niagara University and St. John Vianney Seminary, East Aurora. After ordination on March 9, 1963, he went on to further studies at Catholic University, Washington DC, earning a master of arts in church history, followed by two doctoral degrees from Ottawa University, Ontario Canada and Columbia Pacific University in San Rafael, California.
He later served in parish ministry as assistant pastor of St. Nicholas, Buffalo and St. Joseph, Niagara Falls. He was then named to the faculty of the Diocesan Preparatory Seminary in Buffalo and then at Wadhams Hall Seminary College in Ogdensburg, New York, where he taught religious studies and was a member of the formation staff there.
He was next appointed Director of Vocations for the Diocese of Buffalo and then Director of St. Ignatius Retreat House in Clarence. He was the founding Director of the Permanent Diaconate program in Buffalo and served on several national committees for the permanent deaconate. His last assignment in Buffalo was as Pastor of St. Agnes Parish, Buffalo.
Msgr. Kraus moved to Oakland California in 1987 and served there as campus minister at Holy Name College, as director of diaconate formation, of the Department of Faith and Ministry, and the School for Pastoral Ministry. In 1999, he was appointed parochial administrator of Our Lady of Mercy Church, Point Richmond; and in 2000, pastor of Santa Maria Church, Orinda, California. He retired on June 1, 2013.
