Joseph Rieger June 25, 1922 - Nov. 10, 2013 Longtime Res. Montclair Joseph Rieger, died Sun., Nov. 10 at Agis Living in Moraga after a brief illness. Joseph was born in 1922 in Bavaria where he studied agriculture and majored in forestry before immigrating to California in 1950 with his wife Kathryn. "Joe" continued his education in Oakland and received his A.A. from Merritt College, his B.A. from Cal State Hayward and his MBA from Kennedy University. Joe began a long and accomplished career when he was hired as a maintenance engineer at Alta Bates Hospital in Berkeley in 1964. He proudly continued with the hospital and was recognized repeatedly for his many contributions to the organization where he dedicated his life for the next 32 years until he retired as Director of Engineering Services in 1996. Those years included supervision of critical areas such as construction, facilities, security, safety and emergency response. He also served as a trustee of the Alta Bates Foundation and remained a strong supporter of the medical center throughout his life. Joe was active in the Knights of Columbus, attended St. Margaret and Mary's Church in Oakland, enjoyed his weekly tennis matches and was quite a fan of Oktoberfest. He was a role model, mentor and leader for many, especially his engineering crew. A colleague who worked for him for 32 years said he will always be remembered for the fact that he held himself and everyone he worked with to a very high standard. In addition to his wife Kathryn, Joe is survived by daughter Maria of Los Angeles. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made in Joe's name to the American Cancer Society and Alta Bates Summit's Carol Ann Read Breast Health Center. Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, November 21 at St. Margaret and Mary's Church, 1219 Excelsior Avenue in Oakland, followed by a reception. Private internment will be at Cathedral of Christ the Light in Oakland.
