EUGENE BUCHANAN (BUCK) BATES
Eugene Buchanan (Buck) Bates, of Rockbridge Baths departed this earthly soil December 2, 2006. He was born in 1951 in Lexington, Va., not necessarily in Stonewall Jacksons bedroom, but somewhere in the old generals house. His was a moderately eventful life by most middle class standards. Although his imprint on history will be miniscule, he certainly appeared to be having a good time.
Accomplishments? Well, there were a few (but not too few to mention). He was a manager for the U.S. Postal Service, and during his career, served as postmaster of Millboro, Raphine, Goshen and Rockbridge Baths. Before that he was manager of WREL, a radio station in Lexington. He rode a bicycle across the United States in 1987. At 38 he finally finished his undergraduate degree at James Madison. At 47 he became a pilot, bought an airplane and successfully managed to walk away from over 800 landings. There were the requisite civic organizations and his membership at New Providence Presbyterian Church in Raphine, but other than that, he leaves a paper trail that will include few references for posterity. Buck will be remembered as primarily a social creature, a guy who really enjoyed a good laugh. One of his friends described him as a "party just waiting to happen" and Buck considered that to be an accolade of the highest order.
Surviving Buck and this paid obituary are his wife, Diane Reames Bates; and his son, Joshua Meade Bates and daughter-in-law, Kelly V. Bates, all of Rockbridge Baths; and his daughter, Jennifer Quesnel Bates of Portland, Maine; his sister, Roberta Bates Fauber, lives on Irish Creek in Rockbridge County.
Buck always considered himself to be a lucky fellow, and theres no better evidence of said luck than having a family of this high caliber. Beating him to the grave, so to speak, were his father Fred, his mother Mag, a brother Fred, Jr. and a sister, Laura.
The viewing will be limited to medical students. The family plans a memorial celebration at New Providence Presbyterian Church in Raphine on Friday, December 8, 2006 at 3 p.m. Flowers are unnecessary. Memorial gifts are unwarranted but certainly appreciated. Lexington/Rockbridge Hospice would be a delightful choice, P.O. Box 948, Lexington, Va. 24450.
