PERCY E. ASHBY, son of John Edward and Daisy (Percy) Ashby, was born March 29, 1936 at Longdale, OK. He departed this life on Friday, March 13, 2009 at his home near Canton at the age of 72 years.
Percy was raised and educated at Longdale where he attended school. He entered the United States Army and served his country mostly in Germany.
He was honorably discharged in 1957 and he returned home to marry the love of his life, Mary Davis. The couple was united in marriage July 6, 1957 at her home in Oakwood. They made their first home in Oakwood while Mary finished her schooling. They made their home in several locations before moving to Longdale.
Percy owned and operated the Champlin Service Station in Longdale for several years. Later, he began working as a contract mower for the Corp of Engineers. He worked for Blaine County District 2 driving a truck and mowing for many years before he retired. He was a member of the Longdale Volunteer Fire Department where he served twenty years. He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign War in Okeene and a member of the Canton Christian Church.
Percy enjoyed gardening and sharing the produce with others. He took great pride in his lawn and liked traveling in their camper trailer. But mostly, he loved being with his family and he especially liked the big Sunday dinners with that freezer of homemade ice cream Mary prepared.
He is survived by his wife of fifty one years: Mary Ashby of Longdale; one daughter: Kathleen McClure and husband Larry of Fairview; one son: Kenneth Ashby of Canton; five grandchildren: Rikki Lea Ashby, Angela Littlejohn, Karri Ashby, Kourtney Keeton and Ryan McClure; four great grandchildren: Jada Kimbro, Imyiah Littlejohn, Lilly Keeton and Jazlyn Menifee; two sisters: Jean Kimminau of Hastings, NE and Emma Skinner of Edgar, NE; one brother: Dennis Ashby and wife Ofelia of Canton. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Allen Ashby and one sister, Almeta Larson.
The funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, March 16, 2009 at the Canton Christian Church with Pastor Steve Driskill, officiating. Interment followed in the Longdale Cemetery under the direction of the Redinger Funeral Home in Seiling.
