John was born near Londonderry, Ireland. When the family fortunes waned his father Robert Hicks became a schoolmaster. His mother was well educated and he credited her with his excellent education.
The family immigrated to Canada about 1825 and settled near Quebec. Later he lived in Sackett's Harbor, New York. It is said that he loved this country. In some respects it reminded him of Ireland. Family stories handed down is that while a boy he studied medicine at Dublin and was there when the English went to fight Napoleon. The boys from the medical schools were taken to help care for the wounded and he was at the Battle of Waterloo.
After leaving Canada John, his parents and brothers joined the LDS Church and lived in Nauvoo Illinois for a time. When his father died in 1845, John moved his family along with his mother Frances Armstrong Hicks and his brothers, Samuel, Robert F., and William to Chippewa Valley Wisconsin. They moved to the Chippewa Valley during the fall of 1847. He built a home near Samuel's cabin. His daughter Lydia Minervia was born there and was probably the first white child born in the county. He was on the 1850 Chippewa County census with his wife Phebe and two of his children, Joseph age 5 and Lydia age 1. He was then on the 1860 & 1870 censuses in Pepin Co, Wisconsin.
John was a strong abolitionist and a strong Union man. He signed up for military service on Dec 14 1861. He served in the 16th Wisconsin infantry, but was only in the army about six months. He was discharged on 9 July 1882 account of a hernia on both sides and sunstroke during the siege of Corinth. He had a high opinion of General Grant and thought that he won the was with a little brave help from his men. He strongly opposed to all alcoholic drinks and tobacco. He used to say he believed tobacco was as injurious as alcohol, although it didn't cause as much crime.
He was employed at many things during his lifetime. He was a farmer in Pepin Wisconsin, a machinist, and as a ship captain he made a voyage to Puget-Sound. He practiced medicine for many years making his own from herbs. He knew a great deal about the value of herbs and was fond of hunting. When he lived in Iowa he worked for the state as a surveyor. It is said that he also worked for the father of Buffalo Bill. He always loved the West and eventually settled in Oregon in Dec 1888.
At the time of his death John was unable to walk, because of a fall. In Dec 1897 John died sitting up in his chair.
