information provided by Gary L. Tharp: died from typhoid fever. He enlisted & was mustered in along with his brother George & David, Joshua deserted 26 Nov. 1863 at Island 14, MS River (source: Roster & Record of Iowa Solders in the War of Rebellion. The cemetery is abandoned, near Toronto, his is the only legible headstone.
