Frank Walter Bardoe - Civilian War Dead

Frank was the first child born to Caleb Bardoe and Sarah Jane (nee Humphrey) on 2 February 1894 at 23 Thames Terrace, Gravesend. He had three younger sisters.

By 1911 the family were living in Samaritan Grove, Northfleet and both father and son were employed in the local cement works. Frank was 17 and was a 'cement tester, student'.

During WW1 Frank enlisted in the 14th Battalion, Royal Irish Rifles as Rifleman 17/2242 on 12 December 1915 in Whitehall, London. Posted overseas 20 June 1916 and joined the Battalion in the field on 13 July 1916. Army life must have suited Frank as he was promoted to Corporal 16 August 1917. On 24 March 1918 posted to the 23rd Entrenching Battalion he was wounded with a gunshot to his right arm and by 27 March he had been invalided to England. Frank was sent to the Duchess of Connaught Canadian Red Cross Hospital in Taplow, Buckinghamshire. He was discharged from the Army 1 February 1919 with a pension because of his wounds.

Frank was entitled to the British War Medal and Victory Medal.

Frank met Alice Ellen Lloyd who originally came from Swanscombe and after he was discharged from the Army they married 4 August 1919 at Northfleet.

Their daughter Joan Hilda Sybil Bardoe was born 24 April 1920 but she sadly died aged only four years old 27 February 1925. They had another daughter Mavis A Bardoe who was born in 1926 and then a son Alan F Bardoe born in 1929.

The family moved to 92 Cross Lane East, Gravesend and Frank worked for Gravesend Council as a painter. Before and during WW2 he was an Air Raid Precaution worker. On Saturday 22 January 1944, during an early morning Air Raid, Frank was struck in the neck by a piece of shrapnel and killed. He had been in the hallway of his house just about to put on his coat when an Anti-Aircraft shell hit the roof of his house and exploded. The piece of shrapnel penetrated the upper floor and struck him, he was taken to Gravesend Hospital but was found to be dead on arrival. Other members of the family in another room escaped unhurt. The shell blew a large hole in the roof, and splinters from it peppered adjoining rooms.

At the time of his death Frank was about to assist the Fire Watchers, being a voluntary squad leader of the Rescue Service.

The blast of the shell exploding was felt across the road and Mr Matthew Kubilius, a sector captain of the fire guards, who lived at 101 Cross Lane East was hit in the ankle by a piece of shrapnel as he stood in the doorway of his house, he was taken to hospital.

After a funeral service at Christ Church, Frank was buried in Gravesend Cemetery in plot B13-1827 on 27 January 1944. The Mayor of Gravesend, Councillor H Robson, represented Gravesend Council along with several Councillors. ARP workers formed a guard of honour and Rescue Service members bore his coffin draped in Union Jack to the graveside. The WVS, St James's Scouts, Convent High School were all represented.
