Marysville Daily Appeal - 6/2/1899, p1 - Philip Brown At Rest - Friends in Fraternity and Sorrowing Relatives Join in the Last Rites - The funeral of the late Philip Brown, a pioneer resident of this city, took place yesterday afternoon under the auspices of Yuba Lodge, No. 5, and Marysville Encampment, No. 6, I.O.O.F. It was well attended, many persons being anxious to pay the last mark of respect to the memory of one who was a good citizen, and an old friend. - The remains were removed from his late residence to the Odd Fellows' Hall at noon, where they lay in state for two hours. - The services of the Odd Fellows were held at 2 o'clock and were read by E. A. Cunningham, Noble Grand, and A. Weiss, acting as chaplain. - At the conclusion of the services F. H. Day, who acted as marshal, conducted the Odd Fellows to the busses that were in waiting, and the cortege proceeded to the Hebrew cemetery, where the services were concluded, after which the interment took place. - The following gentlemen, selected from the lodges to which deceased belonged, acted as pallbearers: Yuba Lodge, W. G. Murphy; Marysville Encampment, J. A. Maben; Chosen Friends, L. Kuhn; A.O.U.W., John Learmont; Hebrew Benevolent Society, M. Schwab. - At the close of the Odd Fellows' services and before the body was conveyed to its last resting place A. Weiss recited a prayer from the Hebrew ritual. - Several handsome floral pieces were placed on the casket. - Thirteen children of the deceased, several of whom had traveled long distances, attended the funeral, he having been to them at all times a kind and loving father.
