In August of 1830 the Barbers came to McDonough County and settled on land in Chalmers Township. A House and Barn had to be buildt quickly before Winter arrived. It was a Very Cold & Long Winter with record amounts of snowfall. Provisions became low and the Barbers consisted mainly on dry hominy until Springtime arrived. After surviving their first winter in Illinois, they became better prepared for the future ones.

In 1832 the John D. Barber family moved to Colchester Township and buildt a home and settled a farm. This is where they continued to live the remainder of their lives.
