M. Cohen, 58, Dies At Home Here; Services Thursday Afternoon - Leading Merchant and Businessman Here Yields To Pneumonia Attack.
Mendel Cohen, for the past twenty-three years, a leading merchant of Martinsburg and known widely as a firm friend and a good citizen died Wednesday morning about 6:45 at his home, Cohen Apartments, 133 North Queen street, after a long period of poor health with heart and pulmonary troubles. Pneumonia setting in several days ago, is believed by his physician, Dr. Wainwright, of Baltimore, Md., specialist, to have hastened his death. Mr. Cohen was born in Russia 58 years ago. He came to this country at the age of 19, settling first in Florence, S.C.; later coming to Winchester, Va., and coming to Martinsburg in 1910. Since that time he has been senior member of the firm M. Cohen and Son, retail women's clothing store; he has been active in the business life of the community, and a leader in Jewish religious and charitable work here. He was one of the most active founders and supporters of Bash Yonkev [sic] Synagogue, North Martinsburg, and the cemetery in connection with the synagogue. He was particularly interested in Jewish charities, was head here of the Palestine Relief Fund; past president of B'nai B'rith; and was director of [the] Chamber of Commerce until ill health forced him to give this up. He leaves two sons; Lou Cohen, junior member of the firm here; and Sol Cohen, of Leavenworth, Kansas; and a daughter, Mrs. Sarah Adelson of Baltimore, Md. Leah Adelson of Baltimore is a granddaughter. Mrs. Cohen died nearly four years ago. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 Thursday afternoon, from Cohen Apartments with Rabbi Framm of Hagerstown, Md., officiating. Interment will be in the Bash Yonkev Cemetery, North Martinsburg.
