MORTON, IL - Ellen Sue Cox, 50, of 224 E. Delwood St., Morton, passed away peacefully at 8:05 p.m. Thursday, May 28, 2009, at her home surrounded by her family after a nine-year battle with breast cancer.
She was born December 1, 1958, in Burlington, Iowa, to Marvin and Verna (Wagenbach) Woodward. She married her loving husband of 30 years, John M. Cox, on Oct. 7, 1978, in Burlington, Iowa. He survives.
Also surviving are one son, Joel (Marcy) Cox of Tremont; two daughters, Jenna Kim Cox and Misha Joy Cox, both at home; her parents, Marvin and Verna Woodward of Burlington, Iowa; and four sisters, Sherry (Don) Keppner of Burlington, Iowa, Diane (Tom) Ebert of Cave Creek, Ariz., Bonnie (Tommy) Niemtschke of Austin, Texas, and Beverly (Larry) Moser of Wapello, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her father and mother-in-law, Bill and Mary Cox; and one niece, Kelly Cox.
Ellen worked nine years at Apostolic Christian Timber Ridge in Morton as program coordinator. She loved her Lord Jesus and was a member of the Washington Apostolic Christian Church. She was a home educator for many years and served as a high school literature teacher with the Peoria Cooperative Academy.
Ellen is lovingly remembered as a wonderful wife, mother, daughter and sister, and for her encouraging words to others. She had a tremendous sense of humor and love of cooking and entertaining. She approached life with strong faith and a positive spirit which inspired many.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, June 1, 2009, at Washington Apostolic Christian Church, with church ministers officiating. Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, May 31, at Knapp-Johnson Funeral Home in Morton, and from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Monday at the church. Burial will be at the Washington Apostolic Christian Church Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Apostolic Christian Timber Ridge in Morton; or to an education fund for her children established at CEFCU.
