David Marion Bryan, 65, of Batesville, died Sat., Apr. 23, 2005 at his residence. Mr. Bryan was the sheriff of Panola County and a member of First Baptist Church of Batesville where he served as a deacon. A graduate of Northwest Mississippi Junior College and the University of Mississippi, he coached sports at Corinth High School and South Panola High School before taking office as Sheriff in 1976. As Sheriff, he was a charter and lifetime member of the Mississippi Boys and Girls Ranches, a member of the Mississippi Sheriff's Association and National Sheriff's Association, and served as president of the Panola County Law Enforcement Officers Association and the Mississippi Sheriff's Association. He was selected as Mississippi Officer of the Year in 1985, and that year received the "Going Beyond the Call of Duty" award for saving the life of Robin Lynn Russell. He also served on the Governor's search committee to select a medical examiner, the Governor's Criminal Justice Board, the Governor's Board of Minimum Standards for Law Enforcement Training, and the United States Attorney's Office Law Enforcement Coordinating Committee. He was presently serving on the the advisory board for the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics, the Homeland Security Advisory Committee, and the Anti-Terrorism Task Force for the United States Attorney's Office. He helped establish Panola County Triad in 1996, and was Civitan International Citizen of the Year in 2004. Services were Mon., Apr. 25 at First Baptist Church of Batesville with interment in Orwood Cemetery in Lafayette County.

He was preceded in death by his father, Joel Leden Bryan; and one brother, Jimmie Mathis Bryan. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Ida Margaret Sherman Bryan; two daughters, Dana Elizabeth Bryan Phillps and husband Scott of Columbia, MS, and Olivia Leigh Bryan Sumner and husband John of Jackson, MS; one son, Joel Mathis Bryan and wife Mary Morgan of Nashville, TN; his mother, Alta Jo Cook Bryan of Taylor, MS; three sisters, Janet Ruth Bryan Briscoe of Oxford, Dr. Mina Bryan of Newton, Miss., and Linda Clay Bryan Pitcock of Pope, MS; one brother, Harris Leden Bryan, Sr., of Batesville, MS; and seven grandchildren, Mari Margaret, Will, Madison, Shelby, Bryan, Jordan, and David.
