Arnold Wapelhorst a German immigrant from Borghorst in Nordrhein-Westfalen area of Prussia, came to the Owens Valley with an interest in mining. Records indicate he enlisted into the First Battalion Nevada Cavalry in 1864 before coming to the Owens Valley which was a period of violent conflict between Federal forces and local Indian tribes.
He was naturalized in 1875, ran the American Hotel in Cerro Gordo, and in August 1875 married Mary Louise "Lulu" Lewis the daughter of Margaret Lewis who ran the hospital at Camp Independence. Arnold and Lulu had a daughter Marguerite in 1876 but tragically he died on April 17, 1877. The 1880 census has Lulu and 3 year old Marguerite living at or near Camp Independence with her mother Margaret.
In Oct 11, 1881 Lulu married John Gorman of Independence and had 5 children together. Marguerite eventually married John Ellison Bell March 11 1906 and settled in Sutter County after 1930.
