Joseph married Susan CARR on 13 May 1851, in Harrison Co, KY.

Joseph served in the Union Army, Company D, 7th KY Cavalry. Fought and was captured at the first battle of Cynthiana, KY. Superior confederate forces under John H. MORGAN burned the railroad depot and some cars, and paroled the prisoners.

Joseph was somewhat of a roamer, buying and selling property in Floyd, Harrison and Nicholas counities
