She was a beautician for much of her life, first at the Band Box and then at her own shop. She was also a legendary cook, honing her skills by cooking for friends and family, and eventually winning local contests including the Advertiser's, publishing a cookbook, and representing our culture at several local and national folk festivals, including the 1983 Smithsonian Festival of American Folklife in Washington DC. She was also a regular presenter at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette's Eldershostel Program, and at the Rendez-Vous des Cadiens live radio show at the Liberty Theater in Eunice.
Maude is survived by her husband of 59 years, Elmo, by her children Barry Ancelet and his wife Caroline, Dana Menard and her husband Willert, Jody Ancelet, and Jonathan Ancelet and his wife Tricia. She is also survived by her twelve grandchildren, Jean Ancelet and his wife Mindy, François Ancelet and his wife Katy, Louis Ancelet, Emile Ancelet, Clélie Ancelet, Hunter Menard, Will Menard, Lester Leger III, Courtland Ancelet, Callie Ancelet, Caroline Ancelet, and Claire Ancelet.
She was preceded in death by her mother Ida Chautin Mayer, her father, Valery Mayer, her sister Irene Stelly, and her brothers Bobby Mayer and James Mayer. She leaves a rich legacy of love, generosity and quiet strength among all who knew her.
