Charles was the son of Howarth and Agnes Carman and passed on at the Veterans Administration Medical Center surrounded by his loving family. He attended schools in Louisville, KY, enlisting in the Navy during World War II. He proudly served his country aboard the "USS Battleship Washington". After the war he moved to Maine, marrying Joyce Stevens on February 12, 1949. He worked for C. B. Cummings until his retirement. His favorite hobbies included coin collecting and he was a Civil War buff. He was also a member of the VFW. Known by many as "Papa," his greatest joy was his family. When his family was around him, whether they were gathered around the Christmas tree, collecting shells, brook fishing, at the ocean or just sitting around the front yard, there would be a sparkle in his eyes and a story on his lips. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 54 years, Joyce of South Paris; 4 daughters, Kathy Austin and her husband Rick of North Norway, Becky Dorsey and Gail Lussier both of Norway, and Laurie Carman and her husband Jody of South Paris; 8 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; two sisters, Joanne Dechant of Zion, IL and Mary Adkins of Norway. He was predeceased by a son, William "Terry" in 1949 and seven brothers and sisters. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends and will live in our hearts forever.
Donations in remembrance of Mr. Carman can be made to the Maine Lung Association, 122 State Street, Augusta, ME 04330.
