Obituary: James Harvey McChesney

"Mr. James Harvey McChesney, a highly
respected citizen of this county, died
at his home about 3 mi. north-east of
Fredonia, on Monday, December 28, 1885,
at 3 1/2 o'clock in the evening.

The deceased was born in this county on September 27, 1814 near Farmersville.
His father, Walter McChesney, came from
Virginia; and his mother, who was Miss
Margaret Stevenson, came from South

In 1849 Mr. McChesney was married to Miss
Elanor Milliken. Thirteen children, six
sons and seven daughters, were born to
him, eleven of whom are now living. Soon
after his marriage, he settled on the farm
on which he lived until his death.

The deceased was a gentleman of strong
personal and excellent moral character,
and though of limited educational
opportunities he was a man of
extraordinary intelligence and firm
convictions. He raised a large and
interesting family, all of whom are
highly respected citizens. Possessing
great energy, good business
qualifications, fine physical powers,
and habits of economy, he accumulated a
fine estate, and he gave all his children
a good English education.

An excellent neighbor, useful citizen,
temperate in all habits, regular at church
though not a church member, he was one of
Caldwell's best and most substantial
citizens. He left a legacy of an honored
name and spotless character to his family,
and an example of integrity and upright
living to his neighbors.

During his life, Mr. McChesney was a man of
robust health until a year or two ago some
disease of the stomach seized him. Last
winter he was very ill and was not
expected to live; but finally rallied,
and enjoyed fair health until Sunday
December 27, when he was taken sick.
Monday morning it was seen that his end
was approaching. He died as above stated
at 3 1/2 o'clock in the evening.

Peace to his ashes!"
