Theola M. Evanston, 83, passed away on December 29, 2003 in Phoenix, Arizona. She was born July 18, 1920 in Ft. Yuma, California. Theola performed domestic work in Yuma for most of her adult life. In 1979,she worked for a non-profit Indian organizations in El Cajon, California, and managed an emergency shelter for the homeless. She also owned a cafe at Ft. Yuma, which is where she retired. Theola was also a member of the Quechan Akeel Dance Group and the Quechan Elders Group.
Theola is survived by her son, Vernon Smith; grandsons, Virgil Smith, and Clinton Bard; grand daughter, Deanna Smith, and great-granddaughter, Katharine Smith, all of Winterhaven, California; nieces, Myra Andrews, Dolly Juan, and Charlotte Hills, all of Winterhaven, California; and Virginia Christman, of Alpine, California; and nephew, Darrell Hills, of Salt River Indian Community in Phoenix, Arizona.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Carolyn H. Stillman, son Virgil Smith, and niece Lucille Emerson.
Services will be held Friday, January 9, 204 at Ft. Yuma Methodist Indian Mission at 4:00pm. Tribal Rites will take place after the services. Cremation will take place at 7:00am on Saturday, January 10, 2004. Avis Black will officiate the service. Her final resting place will be the Quechan Cremation Grounds, in Ft. Yuma, California.
Pallbearers will be members of her family. Honorary bearers will be Ralph Yuma, Gregory Yuma, Randolph Allen, Rudolph Allen, Clinton Bard, Hamilton Jefferson, Preston Jefferson, Phil Emerson, and Chris Emerson.
