until 14 yrs. old when he withdrew and began farming, which he followed until he was 21 yrs
old. At the age of 22 he enlisted in the Prussian-Austrian war and was in the service for
three years. He was drilled for three months before his first engagement. He was in the battle
of Koeniggraetz in 1866, which lasted from 8 o'clock in the morning until 9 o'clock in the
evening. In this battle they took 20,000 prisoners, 180 cannons, and 13 flags from the
Austrians. The ground was strewn with dead and wounded. Mangled and part of bodies were
in heaps. Mr. Krueger says that the battle ground after the fight was the most fearful looking
sight he has ever witnessed. There were between 700,000 and 800,000 men in the battle.
He was in several smaller engagements after that. In 1867 he was honorable discharged and
became interested in farming, which he followed until 1870, when he decided to go the United States.
He made a short stop in Chicago and then came directly to Freeborn county,
locating on section 10, in the township of Pickerel Lake, where he bought 40 acres of land at
$7.50 an acre. Later he purchased 80 acres at $10.75 an acre, giving him a good sized farm.
He lives on the land that he originally bought. He has made a success of farming and now
owns considerable land with modern improvements on the home place. He has served on
the town board a number of years and is interested in politics. His wife is hale and hearty at
the age of 62 and both are members of the German Lutheran church.
