Deceased Name: Osmo A. Anderson
SERVICES: Funeral 11 a.m. Thursday in the Community United Church of Christ in Biwabik, with the Rev. Rebecca LeMenager officiating. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Wednesday at the Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Aurora, and will continue for one hour prior to service Thursday at the church. Burial with military honors will be in Lakeside Cemetery in Biwabik.

Osmo A. Anderson, 92, of Biwabik passed away Thursday, Sept. 3, 2009, at the Skilled Nursing Facility of White Community Hospital in Aurora. He showed everyone his Finnish "Sisu" as he overcame many obstacles, especially during his last few years.

He was born Feb. 21, 1917, in Aurora to Charles and Suoma (Salonen) Anderson and was a lifelong resident of Biwabik. He graduated from Biwabik High School in 1935. After graduation, Osmo was in the Civilian Conservation Corps at Side Lake, worked for the DM&IR, graduated from Dunwoody Institute as a baker in 1938, and was then in the CCC at Camp Outing as a baker for two years.

Osmo entered the service with the Army on Sept. 19, 1941, at Fort Snelling. He was in France and Germany for the last year and a half until the war ended. He was discharged on Oct. 11, 1945, at Fort McCoy. World War II and his Army buddies were an important part of his life. Visiting the World War II Museum in Washington, D.C., in 2004 was a meaningful and emotional experience for Doris and him.

Osmo married Doris Obernolte on Aug. 6, 1947. She was the love of his life for 60 years and he missed her daily since her passing two years ago. He owned and operated a bakery in Biwabik from 1946 until November 1955. He was employed at Lake Mine and Erie Mine, retiring in 1979 with 23 years of service at Erie as a mechanic. Their love of travel took the family camping in the early days. After retirement, bus tours to the East Coast and throughout the Midwest, as well as trips to Finland, Alaska and Norway. Vancouver, British Columbia, Golden, Colo., and the Washington, D.C., area were favorite places to visit family.

He was a member of the United Church of Christ in Biwabik, where he served on the church council, was a trustee and moderator and assisted with every remodeling project. He belonged to Peterson-Lofquist-Bronczyk Post 160 in Biwabik for 65 years and was a past commander, the Knights of Kaleva, Senior Citizens Center of which he was the treasurer for several years, and AARP. He served He served on the SSS Draft Board, School Board and Recreation Board.

Osmo enjoyed golfing, bowling, cross-country skiing, gardening, woodworking, playing the organ, camping with his family, fishing and sports — especially baseball, watching the Twins, coaching the Legion baseball team for a few years, playing City Team baseball until the age of 39, watching his children and grandchildren play sports, and baking bread.

Survivors include his children, Mary Beth (Michael) Alsop of Garden Bay. British Columbia, Randy (Carrie) Anderson of Aurora, Nancy (Mick) Sommer of Golden, Colo., and Jeff (Sue) Anderson of Hibbing; seven grandchildren, Cheryl (Scott) Love, Jennifer Alsop, Geoffrey Alsop, Chris Anderson, Danielle Anderson, Jessica (Phil Wallace and kids) Anderson and Corey Anderson; a brother, Vernon (Pat) Rainey of Gaithersburg, Md.; and several nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews and cousins.
