HIAWATHA KILLS RAIL SITTER AT WATERTOWN ON MONDAY EVENING
Sitting on the rail and unmindful of the shrieks of an oncoming locomotive, a man identified as Francis Alberts, 38, LaCrosse, was run down and killed by the Hiawatha, streamlined flyer of the Milwaukee road, at Oak street crossing in Watertown Sunday night. The body was horribly mangled and identity could be established only by papers found on the dead man's person. An empty whisky bottle was laying near the track, it was said.
Since the violent death occurred in Dodge county, Watertown police called Dr. Earl C. Quackenbush of Iron Ridge, county coroner, to the scene. After questioning several people who witnessed the tragedy from an automobile, Dr. Quackenbush ordered the body removed to the Schmutzler funeral home, where preparations were made for burial.
