Donald Bird,Sr. 86, of What Cheer, died Thursday, September 25, 2008 at the Mahaska County Hospital in Oskaloosa. Funeral services will begin at 10:00 AM Tuesday, September 30, 2008 at the Harden Funeral Chapel in What Cheer with Reverend Vince Homan officiating. Burial will be at the Bethel Cemetery south of Delta. Visitation will begin after 12:00 PM on Monday, with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. Memorial contributions may be made to Donalds family.
Donald Bird was born the son of Jerry and Eathyl White Bird on March 14, 1922 in Victor, Iowa. He attended high school in Delta until the tenth grade when he joined the United States Army in 1942. Classified as an expert marksmen in the Company B 349th Infantry, Donald fought in several battles including the battle at Po Valley, Tunisian Sicilian, Naples-Foggia, Rome-Arno and the battle of the Apennines. Before his honorable discharge in 1945 Don was awarded the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with one silver and one bronze star, four overseas service bars; a good conduct medal, the 13th FA brigade bronze star medal, the combat infantryman badge and a purple heart for the wounds he received on the battle fields in Italy.
After returning home for WWII, Donald married Gwendolyn Hadsell at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa on July 14, 1946. The couple then moved to Elgin, Illinois where he attended the Elgin Watch College. Don then opened Birds Jewelers in Joy, IL where he sold and repaired watches. Donald then accepted a position as a guidance repairman at the Los Angeles International Airport where he worked on the instrument panels of commercial aircrafts. After eleven years at the airport Don moved back to Iowa and worked for Kingsbury and most recently, Amana Refrigeration.
Don loved the sport of fishing and everything that came with it, he also enjoyed playing cards with his friends, fixing watches, tinkering, camping, and anything that allowed him to spend time with his family, especially fishing.
He is survived by his wife Gwendolyn, three sons: Donald Jr. (Cheryl) Bird of Delta, Richard (Debbie) Bird and William (Chrissy Repp) both of What Cheer, his two daughters; Donna (Ray) Fogle and Elizabeth (Fred) Van Patten also of What Cheer, two brothers; Bob (June) Bird of River Side, CA; Leonard (Diane) Bird of Marengo, two sisters; Dorothy (Verlin) Crook of Waterloo and Alice (Sidney) Cannon of California, a sister in law Hazel Bird of Hayesville; sixteen grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Donald is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and a sister in law; Harold Bird and Jess (Marie) Bird, his granddaughter Shelly Fogle and his great grandson, Mathew Fogle
