CARLTON, Mr. Joseph Wendell "Cootie," 61, of King & Queen Court House, Va., died Saturday, November 30, 2013. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward Lee and Josephine Elliott Carlton; one brother, Alvie H. Carlton; one sister, Verna May Carlton King; and a grandchild, Baby Bristow. Wendell is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Doreen Richards Carlton; daughter, Wendy Carlton Bristow (Elvis); grandson, Carlton L. Bristow; a sister, Hilda C. Courtney (Roland); a brother, William L. Carlton (Shirley); and a host of many nieces, nephews and cousins. Wendell graduated from York Academy in 1973 and was employed by Chesapeake Corp. in 1973 and continued to work at the paper mill until retiring in January of 2013. He became a charter member of the Central King & Queen Volunteer Fire Department in the late 1960s, was a member of the Little Plymouth Hunt Club until 2001, and was a lifelong member of Lower King & Queen Baptist Church (Wares). Wendell loved antique vehicles and had a big heart for animals, always trying to help a needy animal. A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Thursday at Vincent Funeral Home, 417 11th St., West Point, Va., with interment following at Lower King & Queen Baptist Church (Wares) Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, also at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Central King & Queen Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 26, King & Queen Court House, Va. 23085, Hospice of Virginia, P.O. Box 2098, Tappahannock, Va. 22560, or to your favorite animal shelter.
