DEATH OF DOC BEETS - Deceased Had Been a Kansan Since 1856.
Henry Palmer (Doc) Beets, resident of Kansas since 1856, died at the Norris Nursing home, Paola, Friday, August 20, 1943, at the age of 88 years.
Mr. Beets was born October 16, 1854, at East Falls, Grand river, Cass county, Mo., son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Beets. When less than a year old he came with his parents to the place homesteaded by then in 1856. As a young man he attended the Kansas State Normal at Emporia in 1873-74. His marriage to Lide Miller took place October 18, 1877, and she preceded him in death March 1, 1931. They celebrated their golden wedding October 16, 1927, at their farm home, 3 miles north of Hillsdale.
Of the five children born to them, three preceded the father in death - Homer, Elsie and Ralph. Surviving are the daughter, Mrs. Fisher, and a son, Fred Beets, of Hillsdale. He also leaves a sister, Mrs. Fannie Lynn, Pittsburg, Penn., 18 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
Funeral rites were conducted Sunday afternoon at the Hillsdale Presbyterian, Rev. I. L. Neuenswander, Spring Hill Methodist Minister, officiating. Pallbearers were nephews - Ted and Clyde Miller, of Kansas City; Claude, Will, Jess and Clyde Beets. Mrs. Claude Beets, Mrs. Clyde Beets and Wilda and Maxine Kice assisted with the flowers. Interment was in the Hillsdale cemetery. Mrs. Bart Lewellyn, Mrs. Harry Bryant, Mrs.Winnie Young and Barbara Jo Young sang the hymns, Virginia Leigh Bryant playing their accompaniment. Those coming from a distance were Don and Muriel Harbison, Ottawa; Mr. and Mrs. Roy Beets, Brownie Winfrey and Dorothy Beets, Independence, Mo.; Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Miller, Ted Miller, Mrs. Minnie Miller, Warren Fisher, Mrs. Norman Fisher, Mr. and Mrs. McKinley King, Kansas City, and Mr. and Mrs. Rex Smith, Merriam, Kansas.
