Clayton L. Hanson, 80, died Monday, Oct. 30, 2006, at the Gowrie Care Center, Gowrie.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church, Somers, with Pastor Crystal Oberheu officiating. Burial will be in the Callender Cemetery with military rites by Albert J. Hanson American Legion Post No. 592 of Callender and V.F.W. Post 1856 of Fort Dodge. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Palmer Funeral Home in Gowrie.
He is survived by his wife Wanda; son Ron Hanson and his wife Ruth of Somers; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; sisters, Lois Knabe and Shirley Hanson, both of Des Moines; and brothers, Cleo Hanson of Calgary, Canada, and Wayne Hanson of Colo. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sofus and Selma (Esperson) Hanson, son, Jim Hanson, and infant sister, Gladys Rose Hanson.
Clayton L. Hanson was born June 29, 1926, in Callender, Iowa. He attended schools in Somers and later received his honorary G.E.D. certificate. Clayton served in the U.S. Navy during WW II and was placed on the destroyer No.76-JC Owens, later transferring to the cruiser, USS Houston. While on leave in 1946, Clayton was united in marriage to Wanda Vinchattle. After returning in 1947 from the Navy, the couple established their home in rural Somers where Clayton farmed and operated a trucking business. For a number of summers, Clayton and Wanda hosted many Swedish young men which allowed these people the opportunity to learn the farming operation. Many friendships and memories were established.
Clayton was a member of the United Methodist Church, Somers, and the Albert J. Hanson American Legion Post No. 592 of Callender.
