John M. Brewer was a son of Asa L. Brewer (c1825-c1865) and his wife, Martha Ann* from North Carolina. John M. was the husband of Melvina Conner, daughter of Duckery "Duck" Conner and Ada (Unknown).

John's father, Asa L. Brewer, was a son of Asa Brewer (c1788-c1856), son of David Brewer who came from Johnston County, North Carolina around 1800 and settled on lands just south of Lake View. John M. resided on the lands of his father and grandfather (part of the old David Brewer lands) on the west side of Highway 9 just south of Lake View. John's small home is still standing (2012) in a field on the misnamed "Bass" Road (see photo caption.)

The maiden name of John M's mother, Martha, is given as Brewer on the death certificates of three of her children. One or two could be an error that was sometimes made - giving the married name instead of the maiden name. But three instances seems quite meaningful. So we believe she was most likely Martha Ann Brewer of Robeson County, NC. There was a distantly related Martha Brewer of the right age, daughter of John Brewer, whose family resided in Robeson County, NC.

Confusing matters is an unwed Martha Wallace who resided, with William James Wallace of NC and his wife, Rose Ann Page, near the Brewer residence. This Martha also was from North Carolina and of a likely age, and I theorized for awhile that John M.'s mother may have been she. But I have to believe the three death certificates could not all be errors of the informants. Still, I hesitate to say definitely that her maiden name was Brewer.

Florence Page, a granddaughter of John M., said John's brother, George Brewer, resided in a log cabin that stood on the property when she was a girl. John's brother, George, was buried on adjoining lands (more of the old David Brewer lands) in the Joel B. Hayes Cemetery. Others in this Brewer family, including John's parents, Asa L. and Martha, are also believed buried there.

Children of John M. Brewer & his wife, Melvina Conner, were:

- Asa L. Brewer (A. C. Brewer on his tombstone at Bear Swamp Church) mar. Moniley Murray.

- Isadora "Dora" Brewer mar. Oliver Watts, bur. Marietta Cemetery, Robeson County, NC.

- Ben Tillman "Bentilm" Brewer died young bur. Joel B. Hayes Cemetery.

- Magnolia "Nolia" Brewer mar. Will Miller, son of Neil, bur. Neil Miller Cemetery.

Based on Brewer family research of Jo Church Dickerson and Bible record of John M. & Melvina (Conner) Brewer; Bible in the possession of Eutha (Alford) Brewer in 2010.
