Herk A. Abbondanza, 86, of Canonsburg, died Thursday, May 24, 2007, in Greenery Rehabilitation and Health Care Center, Canonsburg.
He was born February 12, 1921, in Prossedi, Italy, a son of Leone and Nicolina Napoleoni Abbondanza.
He was a World War II veteran, serving with the U.S. Army in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe. During his service he was awarded a Good Conduct Medal, four Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart while serving in the European Theater.
Mr. Abbondanza worked in various positions for McGraw-Edison Corp. for more than 37 years, most recently as large finisher.
He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 191 in Canonsburg and AARP and was an avid bowler. He bowled in the Monday night American Legion League and the Wednesday Men's City League. He also was a mall walker and an avid reader.
Mr. Abbondanza was a member of St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church in Canonsburg.
On July 25, 1945, in St. Patrick's Church, he married Dolores Alterio, who survives.
Also surviving are two sons, David (Debbie) Abbondanza of Houston and Dennis (Sherri) Abbondanza of Canonsburg; a brother, Albert Abbondanza of Canonsburg; four grandchildren, Matthew, Jason and Jonathan Abbondanza and Jonelle Williams; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Deceased are two sisters, Agnes Abbondanza Alterio and Alena Abbondanza.
Friends will be received from 4 to 9 p.m. Monday in Mario L. DeAngelo Funeral Home, 194 East College Street, Canonsburg. A blessing service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 29, in the funeral home with interment to follow in National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, Cecil Township.
